Now these certainly are not pleasant topics to talk about, but it is better to be prepared, to know what you are dealing with and to take the necessary precautions to deal effectively with these culprits.
FLU
By now, I think everyone has heard something about the flu that is going around. It is called the "Swine .Flu" and it is a bad bug! I don't want to get too technical here, but I am sure that you have heard "epidemic" and "pandemic" used on the news and it is good to know what is being discussed. A pandemic refers to an epidemic over a wide geographical area. An epidemic is a widespread outbreak of an infectious disease where many people are infected at the same time.
Rather than try to cut-and-paste and provide information to you here, I am going to refer you to the CDC ("Centers for Disease Control) Website. The CDC provides accurate information that is updated daily, sometimes several times. Let me just warn you that the CDC provides A LOT of information (for scientists and medical professionals, and for the general public), so make sure that you are in a section that you understand.
I have also provided a link (below) to a recent article about the flu running in the AARP Magazine.
While this is a serious flu, try not to panic. Stay calm and use the common-sense techniques that you have learned in the past about good hygiene, and especially good hand-washing (and not just running your hands under the water)! Remember to cover your mouth when you cough and remind your associates to do the same. Watch what you touch and remember to wash your hands frequently. Use the hand sanitizer in the dining room before eating. (Hand sanitizer is available in the BX, so you may want to get some for your room.)
If you have questions after reviewing the CDC Website and looking at the AARP article, check with your doctor or call the ACC to speak with a Nurse. The number for the ACC is 944-4660. If you think you have symptoms of the flu, call the ACC Nurse and get advice on what to do. Should you develop symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea, contact the ACC Nurse and let your section Deputy know.
Okay, let's visit the CED website. You may want to get a pencil and paper to take some notes. You can also print out information that is of interest. Information should also be available in your section office.
Remember, take precautions to stay well and help each other out. If you do get sick, remember to call the ACC Nurse. Take care of yourself and try to keep from spreading the flu. Let’s go to the CDC Website for further info: www.CDC.gov/swineflu. CDC

Now on to SCABIES. [NOTE: Since there has been an outbreak of scabies here at the Veterans' Home, I have devoted an entire page to scabies, its treatment and the hassles it causes ... just one little mite! Anyway, be cautious, stay informed and get treatment if needeed.]

Let me just give a little info about Scabies and then link you to the CDC. The CDC has some great information on Scabies.
Some of you may remember Scabies from school days or time spent in the military. Scabies is caused by an "itch mite," which cannot be seen by the naked eye. As the name of the mite says, it it causes an intensely itchy rash. Let me pass you on to the CDC website - they do a good job of describing Scabies, how you catch it and get rid of it.
